FUEL MANAGEMENT

This course is designed for all personnel whose responsibility lie in the area of bunkering fuel oil and adjusting the various machinery used for the treatment and consumption of fuel oil.

Objective: To deliver up-to-date, realistic training that provides knowledge, confidence, and competence to ensure safe and cost effective use of bunkered fuel oil.

After successfully completing this training, students will have the necessary competency to:

  • Understand and interpret the fuel oil analysis report

  • Use the analysis report to adjust relevant equipment so as to maximize the full potential of the fuel

  • Be aware of any adverse effects the fuel may cause throughout the total fuel system

  • Be aware of current regulations and guidelines as to the use of on board fuels

  • Understand the responsibilities and duties needed during the bunkering, treatment, and consumption of fuel oil

  • Crude Oil Refinery Process

    • overview of various refinery processes

    • fuel oil characteristics

  • Bunkering

    • pre-bunkering, bunkering, after bunkering, and oil record book

  • Fuel Oil Analysis

    • laboratory analysis of fuel oil

    • on board testing of fuel oil and interpretation of the fuel oil analysis

  • Adjustment of Auxiliary Equipment to Match Fuel Quality

    • fuel cleaning system

    • fuel treatment system

    • engine fuel system

    • engine cylinder liner lube oil system

  • MARPOL Regulations and Guidelines as Related to Fuel

    • changeover from high sulphur to low sulphur fuel oil

    • low sulphur areas

    • bunker sample and SECA fuel change over record book

Methodology: A practical hands-on training is interwoven with the use of training videos as well as lecturers. Student participation is encouraged via the use of class exercises where various current fuel oil analysis report are used. Classroom discussions are encouraged throughout the training. Operation and adjusting of the installed equipment, i.e. Alfa Laval’s fuel cleaning system and Alfa Laval’s fuel treatment system, are used to synchronize class room discussion with practical training. Comprehensive training materials are complied in a binder of which every candidate receives a copy.
